hypermarket

A very large general store combining merchandise of a department store with that of a supermarket.

A hypermarket is a general store large enough to anchor a shopping center. It combines the food selection of a supermarket (sometimes on a reduced scale) with the variety of a department store. Normally at least fifty percent of the wares in a hypermarket consist of clothing and household wares, with a large section for groceries and additional sections for merchandise like electronics, books and magazines, etc. Most hypermarkets belong to large chains.

The store combines grocery selection with substantial clothing and household merchandise. The supermarket-style food range can be reduced in scale.

The definition describes clothing and household wares as normally at least half the merchandise. Membership in a large chain is common but is not mandatory.
