tip height
The distance from base level to the highest constructed or attached object on a structure.
Tip height is defined as the vertical elevation from the base to the highest man-made part of the building, or any fixed attachment thereto, whichever is higher. This includes flagpoles, antennae, fences, cooling towers, signs, aircraft warning lights, and all kinds of chimneys.
Mobile parts such as extendable signs or wind turbines may be included in the tip height as long as the variation of their heights is regular; in this case the maximum height shall constitute the tip height. Attachments such as flags, loose ropes or wires, and trees shall not be considered.
The measurement runs from the base of the structure, the level of the lowest significant open-air pedestrian entrance. A building on a slope therefore has one height rather than one per side, and a figure taken from the low side of the same building is a different number.
Two sources giving different heights for one building have usually measured from different levels rather than measured badly.
