SKYDB

Long text

SKYDB is the world’s most comprehensive database of skyscrapers and tall buildings. It records what a building is, where it stands, who designed and built it, and how it changed over the years, from the first proposal through construction to completion and, where it applies, demolition.

The records are maintained by a community of members and editors: architects, engineers, urban researchers, photographers and journalists, who add what they know and correct what others got wrong. A structured backbone keeps the context of every change, so a figure can be traced to when it entered the record and who put it there. That depth and continuity are why SKYDB is so often cited as the source.

SKYDB Awards

Long text

The SKYDB Awards name the best new skyscrapers of a year and have been given every year since 1999. A building qualifies by being at least 100 meters tall and finished in the award year. There is no entry form, no submission deadline and no fee: the candidates come out of the database itself.

The winner is decided in two stages. Any member can nominate one building from that year’s completions, and members who have entered at least 100 buildings into SKYDB then vote on the list that produces. Nobody reviews the nominations beforehand and nothing is struck from the list. Every year that has been decided is published on the award pages, with the winner and the two places behind it.
