HSB Turning Torso: 2005 Winner

The SKYDB Awards recognize high-rise buildings that unite architectural quality with practical performance, and HSB Turning Torso in Malmö was selected as the 2005 SKYDB Awards Winner.

The 190-meter tower is divided into nine five-story units that rotate progressively around a concrete core. From bottom to top, the square floor plates turn through 90 degrees and give the building the posture of a twisting body. The concept grew from Santiago Calatrava's sculpture of a human torso in motion.

A steel spine and external supports help carry the loads created by the shifting floor plates. Apartments occupy most of the tower, bringing a permanent residential population to Malmö's redeveloped Western Harbour. The award recognizes a sculptural idea that remains understandable in the plan and structure of every floor.
