protected division
Conservation areas where what may be done with the land is restricted by law.
A protected division is a division whose areas restrict what may be done with the land in order to conserve it: a nature reserve, a landscape protection area, a water protection zone, a heritage area. A conservation authority designates each area by a legal instrument that states what is restricted.
Its boundary follows the thing being protected, so it can cut through parcels and quarters and ignore municipal borders entirely. Areas of different protective purposes overlap freely, and one piece of ground may carry several designations with different restrictions.
A planning division marks where a program applies and ends with the program. A protected area is meant to last and restricts use rather than directing development.
