A statue is a freestanding sculpture which forms a discernable representation of a person or group of persons. An abstract representation of a person which is not readily identifiable should be classified as a freestanding artwork rather than a statue. If the statue is carved out of rock which is naturally fixed to the site, it should be classified as an in-situ sculpture.

The recognizable human representation is freestanding. The stated distinction excludes an abstract form whose human subject is not readily discernible.

A carving made from rock left in its natural position has the separate in-situ sculpture form. The source and placement of the material therefore matter as well as the represented subject.
