Volumes are measurements expressed in cubic units of length, which describe the amount of three-dimensional space displaced or enclosed by any defined three-dimensional bounds.

The boundary can enclose empty space or follow the extent of a material. An interior volume and a quantity of construction material therefore describe different parts of one structure.

A cubic meter specifies space, without stating its contents' mass. Material density is needed to relate that volume to a mass measurement.
