The gutting of a built object begins at the first steps in the substantial demolition and removal of non-structural components of that object. This normally means removing interior walls, floors, and/or portions of the facade which are not load-bearing.

Gutting is usually an early stage in either the total renovation or demolition of an object.

The first substantial removal of non-load-bearing components marks the event. Gutting can prepare for either renovation or demolition, so its beginning does not establish which of those larger processes will follow.
