hanging incandescent lamps

Lights using electrically heated filaments which project or hang from the ceiling.

Hanging incandescent lamps refer to any ceiling-mounted lights which use incandescent bulbs (in which an electrically heated filament produces light), and which project below the surface of the ceiling. These include electric chandeliers (electroliers) as well as many forms of hanging and mounted ceiling lamps.

Lamps which are flush with the ceiling or recessed behind its surface are generally classified as recessed lighting. The ceiling in this case may be a dropped ceiling or a structural ceiling, and may be a horizontal plane or a sloped surface.

Projection below the ceiling and an incandescent light source establish the form. A fixture can be rigidly mounted rather than suspended on a cord or chain, provided it extends below the ceiling surface.
