bridgehouse

Related terms: bridge operation

A control station for operating a movable bridge, usually attached or nearby and occupied when needed.

A bridgehouse is a place where the operations of a movable bridge are controlled. Bridgehouses are usually attached or positioned very close to a bridge, and are usually elevated to provide a full view of ship traffic as well as bridge traffic and the bridge itself. Very often these are not continuously staffed, but occupied when needed.

The station controls the bridge's movement and operation. Its position commonly gives the operator a view of both waterborne traffic and traffic using the bridge.

Continuous staffing is not required. A station occupied only when the bridge needs to move retains this operational purpose.
