earth retention

A barrier which holds earth, sand, or rock in place by stabilizing it or blocking it from the other side.

An earth retention barrier is a wall, screen, berm, or other object which prevents soil, mud, sand, gravel, rock, or other forms of earth from sliding, shifting, eroding, or falling onto the other side of the barrier.

The object restrains movement of soil or other earth material across the barrier. Sliding, falling, and erosion are included forms of movement.

The retained material can range from mud and sand to gravel or rock. A water-retention barrier has a separate purpose even when both functions occur together.
