A floor or ground surface covered by living grass rooted in soil, generally kept short for walking, recreation, or sport.
As a flooring or ground surface, grass is a soft, naturalistic layer of grass plants anchored in soil and preserved from overgrowth of other plant species. When used as a lawn, sports pitch, walking surface, or recreational surface it is generally trimmed short, to no more than about 6-9 centimeters.
The grass plants form a living surface anchored in soil. Synthetic grass-colored surfacing is a different material.
Lawns and sports or walking surfaces are generally maintained at the stated short height of about 6 to 9 centimeters or less. Control of competing growth keeps grass as the surface cover.
