Venezuelan municipality
The code identifying a Venezuelan federal entity or municipality in the political and territorial division kept by INE.
INE, the national statistics institute, maintains the territorial division and assigns a geographic location code to every unit in it. Venezuela has 23 states plus the Capital District, and 335 municipalities.
The length states the tier. A federal entity has two digits, a municipality four: the two-digit entity followed by two digits for the municipality within it, so Acevedo is 1501 in entity 15. Municipality numbers restart in every entity, so the last two digits mean nothing on their own.
Entity codes were assigned in alphabetical order, with the Capital District taking 01 ahead of the sequence and the federal dependencies placed last. An older scheme from the institute's predecessor numbered the states differently, so a code from a historical source may not match.
