A vertical addition to a built object begins construction when continuous work starts on a significant addition resting on top of the existing object. If the addition will extend out to the side, it should be classified as a horizontal addition.

The new addition rests on the existing object. A horizontal addition instead abuts the side and rests on new foundations.

The event records the start of continuous construction on the upper addition. Vertical addition completed requires the addition to be physically finished and ready for use.
