A roadway is any type of corridor where road vehicles can be driven independently, without tracks or any kind of guidance system. This includes corridors of varying levels of access to the surrounding area and adjacent objects.

The vehicles travel along the corridor without being constrained to rails or an equivalent guide. The road surface provides the route rather than a track determining each vehicle's exact path.

Access arrangements can vary. A highway limits connections with adjoining routes, while an alley serves access through a city block.
