A load-bearing staircase frame built of bricks, rocks, or other hard pieces stacked and joined together.
A masonry staircase is a set of steps in a built object whose supporting framework is built of bricks, stones, concrete masonry units, clay pieces, adobe, or other mineral-based building units stacked in a tight-fitting arrangement and usually bonded together with mortar. Masonry staircases lack the tensile strength of other stairway materials, and are usually built low to the ground or in places where they do not need extensive structural support.
Individual mineral-based building units provide the support through a close stacked arrangement. Mortar is usual, without being required in every masonry staircase.
This differs from steps cut directly into rock already at the site. Such in-place carving belongs to hewn stone stairs.
