The cleaning or maintenance work is performed by robots or automatic machines. Housing in a maintenance unit is usual but is not a required arrangement for every robotic facade system.

A building maintenance unit can carry human workers or mechanical robots. The robotic feature specifically identifies automated maintenance work, rather than every unit that moves a human window washer along the facade.
