US county subdivision

The ten-digit geographic identifier of a US county subdivision, composed by the Census Bureau from the state, county and subdivision codes.

Ten digits: two state, three county, five subdivision. Abbot, Maine is 2302100100, where 23 is Maine, 021 Piscataquis County and 00100 the town.

A county subdivision is the division of a county rather than a settlement. In about 29 states it is a minor civil division, a genuine unit of government such as a town or township; elsewhere it is a census county division, which the Bureau draws for statistics and which has no legal function.

This is why one name can carry two codes of different lengths. In New England, New York, Michigan and Wisconsin a town is a government here, while the built-up center of the same town is separately a place with a US place GEOID. The two geographies overlap rather than nest.
