sub-national landmark protection

Legal protection of a built object against alteration or destruction from a state, provincial, or other sub-national government.

A built object has sub-national landmark protection when it has secure legal protection from alteration or destruction from its state, provincial, or other sub-national government (e.g. from a provincial government or the government of a federated state).

The protecting authority is a subdivision of the country rather than its national government. A state or provincial designation has this governmental source regardless of the object's public prominence.

An object can receive protection from more than one government level. National and local protection describe different sources of designation.
