weatherboarding

Related terms: clapboarding

A facade of horizontal parallel boards or slats, each angled outward at the bottom to overlap the piece below.

Weatherboarding is an extremely common facade system, in which parallel boards or slats are arranged horizontally, each one canted outward at the bottom to overlap the board or slat below it. This forms a protective layer which sheds water very easily, as the pattern of overlapping boards allows no gaps for water to settle into.

The most common materials used in a weatherboard facade are wood, aluminum, and vinyl.

The overlapping edges distinguish weatherboarding from slats fitted flush against one another. Wood, metal, or vinyl can use the same overlapping arrangement.
