lantern

A building summit formed by an architectural light fixture or lantern pavilion, excluding utility warning lights.

Lanterns include open pavilions, such as those used traditionally for sheltering a light, as well as architectural lighting fixtures which belong to the design of a building. Utility lights such as aircraft warning lights are not included, but decorative beacon lights are generally classified with lanterns.

A lantern can be an open pavilion traditionally associated with sheltering a light or a lighting fixture integral to the design. Decorative beacons are generally included.

An aircraft warning light serves a utility purpose and is excluded. Its position at the highest physical point does not make it an architectural lantern.
