The class is used in more than one legal system. In British Columbia it is a municipal class for a populated place with legally defined boundaries. In Turkey it is the municipality associated with a district, including municipalities below a metropolitan authority.
A district can be a territorial division without a municipal corporation. A district municipality has the governing body and legal personality of a municipality.
