monolith

A simple upright shaft appearing as a solid mass, including hollow constructions that resemble solid rock.

A monolith is a simple vertical shaft which has the appearance of a solid mass of material. It is normally constructed as an ornament or marker. Although a monolith is traditionally a solid mass of rock, this form of structure can include hollow structures with the appearance of solid rock shafts.

The solid appearance is the defining physical characteristic. An internal void does not exclude a shaft that still presents the form of a solid mass.

An obelisk has a tapering square shaft and pyramidal cap. A column has a defined base and capital, giving each a more specific monolithic form.
