A domestic style characterized by simple lines, broad gables, gentle curves, and rustic materials.
The shingle style is a late Victorian style mainly used in American domestic architecture. Reacting against the excessive decoration of the Queen Anne style, it features relatively simple forms and broad masses, although it may result in fairly complex shapes through a combination of building wings with multiple gables and turrets. The style takes its name from the wood shingle facades that are most commonly used in its representative houses. Distinguishing features include broad, prominent gables, round arches, rounded corners, and windows recessed behind rounded perforations in the facade.
Approximate dates: 1880 - 1910
The shingled surfaces connect the broad masses with less applied decoration than Queen Anne design. The overall composition can still be complex, with several wings, gables, or turrets.
