monastery chapel

A house of worship that belongs to a monastery or other religious community, and is not a parish church.

Pictured: Klosterkirche Blaubeuren

A monastery chapel is a house of worship that forms part of a monastery or a similar religious community, and which is not a parish church. It may be part of or separate from the main monastery building(s).

Monastery chapels are normally used by monks or nuns on a daily basis or even more frequently for prayer, mass, and sacraments.

The chapel belongs to the religious community and serves its worship. Physical separation from the main monastery building does not end that institutional relationship, while parish-church status has the explicit exclusion above.
