bauxite mine

Related terms: aluminum mine

A site where naturally occurring bauxite is extracted from the earth, mainly for aluminum production.

A bauxite mine is a site for the extraction of natural bauxite deposits from the earth. Bauxite is a rock containing gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore mixed with iron oxides and kaolinite clay. It is the primary source of aluminum used in industrial or construction applications.

Most bauxite mines are open-pit or strip mines, with the ore extracted by excavation rather than tunneling.

The material extracted is bauxite, the raw rock source for aluminum production. An aluminum-processing facility using bauxite brought from elsewhere does not have a bauxite-mining use on that basis.
