food bank
A collection and storage facility for food intended for people in need, usually supplied onward to food pantries.
A food bank is a collection facility similar to a warehouse for foodstuffs to be distributed to hungry or needy persons. Normally food is kept in a food bank before being sent to various food pantries, where it is served directly to persons in need.
If the same facility serves as both food bank and food pantry, it is normally classified simply as a food pantry.
The bank holds food within the assistance supply system. A food pantry provides it directly to people in need, and a single facility can combine these storage and distribution functions.
