total roof area
The total area of all parts of a structure's roof, including flat and sloping sections.
The total roof area of a structure is the cumulative area of all planes belonging to any section of roof on that structure. This includes flat roof sections, sloped roof sections, and curved roof sections. The area is calculated using the basic surface area of each plane, so that a sloped roof would have more area than the ground it covers. However, small indentations or currugations in a plane do not increase its basic area for purposes of this field.
An area is only comparable alongside the standard it was measured to. National measuring codes differ over balconies, atrium voids and shafts, so two published figures for one building can both be correct.
A figure that covers a complex rather than a single building is a different measurement again. Where a tower shares a podium, the record has to say whether the podium is inside the figure.
