access control system

Electronic systems which boost security by verifying the access rights of persons entering an area.

An access control system is any kind of electronic system which ensures that persons entering a building or other area are authorized to do so. It may require entering a code on a number pad, swiping a keycard, or displaying a fingerprint or retina to an electronic eye. It is often used in conjunction with a turnstile and/or security guard staff.

The electronic system verifies permission to enter. A keypad, card reader, or biometric reader can provide the identifying input.

A turnstile or security guard can accompany the system but is not mandatory. A staffed entrance alone does not establish electronic access control.
