indian reserve
Land set aside for the use of a First Nation in Canada, administered separately from the surrounding municipality.
An Indian reserve is land held by the Crown for the use and benefit of a First Nation under Canada's Indian Act. Statistics Canada counts each as a census subdivision, which is why they appear beside municipalities in the register.
A reserve is not part of the municipality that surrounds it and is not governed by it, so a reserve enclosed by a city is a separate region rather than a district of that city.
One First Nation commonly holds several reserves, numbered rather than separately named, and the parcels can lie far apart. Each carries its own code.
The term is the legal one used by the register. It describes the land status, not the community living there.
