folding bridge

A folding bridge is an openable bridge with a segmented span which folds open horizontally like an accordion. The segment attached to the shoreline may function as a bascule bridge with a counterweighted hinge.

The opening action folds successive segments horizontally. A span that curls upward vertically is a different articulated bridge form.

The shoreline segment can have a counterweighted hinge, but that arrangement is optional. The segmented folding action defines the bridge.
