Luxembourg commune code

STATEC, the national statistics institute, assigns the code. It is also Luxembourg's entry in the European list of local administrative units, but the code is national in origin: member states supply their own lists and Europe compiles them.

Four digits: two for the canton and two for the commune within it. Beaufort is 1001 in the canton of Echternach, Luxembourg City 0304, Esch-sur-Alzette 0204.

The leading zero matters for most of the country, since the cantons run from 01 to 12 and the great majority of codes begin with one. There are 100 communes today, down from 105 through mergers.
