A weathervane is an instrument usually placed at the peak of a roof or tower, which is capable of turning freely on its vertical axis and thus points in the direction of the wind. Weathervanes in many areas traditionally feature a rooster in their design.
Its directional function depends on free rotation around the upright axis. The moving part responds to the wind rather than remaining in one fixed orientation.
A rooster is a traditional design rather than a required shape. Likewise, a roof or tower peak is the usual setting, while the instrument's turning and wind-indicating function defines it.
