emblem

A building summit formed by a meaningful symbol used as an architectural adornment.

An emblem is a physical sign or symbol which is identified with a particular meaning. The most common architectural emblems used at the tops of buildings are religious symbols such as crosses, but emblems can also be heraldic shields or other secular signs.

The symbol can be religious or secular. Crosses are common examples, but a heraldic shield can also provide the architectural summit.

When an emblem stands above a spire, the emblem supplies the highest architectural point. The supporting spire is then not the top element.
