area

The total land and water surface belonging to and occupied by an object or geographic entity.

The area of any object or entity is the amount of two-dimensional planetary surface it occupies. This is the total of land and water area which is integral to the entity and generally recognized as belonging to it.

Water enclosed within the recognized entity boundary contributes alongside land. A land-only figure leaves out part of an entity that includes a lake or other water surface.

The surface is counted once within the boundary. Stacked building floors do not multiply this geographic area, even though they can contribute to a separate cumulative floor-area measurement.
