city
A populated area with some degree of self-governance, which does not belong to any other city.
A city is an inhabited place with some degree of self-government. Towns and villages are listed as cities, as well as defined unincorporated areas such as townships.
In certain cases, conglomerations of self-governing boroughs may be widely recognized as cities and are therefore listed as such. (Examples include London, England and several Australian cities.)
The place has a recognized inhabited identity and the degree of self-government described above. The local term can be town or village rather than city, and the stated borough-group exceptions remain part of this broad meaning.
