A roof covering formed from thick overlapping mats of cut grasses or other plant stalks.
Thatch roofing is made of thick mats of overlapping plant stalks, often wheat, rye, or seagrass. It is a primitive material, but is still used today for convenience or for its aesthetic or historicizing qualities. It occurs far more frequently in rural areas and villages than in cities. It can last several decades.
The cut stalks are built up into a thick covering rather than growing in a soil layer. The plant used can vary within the stalk-based construction.
Sod roofing consists of living grass rooted in soil. A fabric roof is made from suspended cloth or a similar flexible sheet, rather than mats of overlapping stalks.
