Elevator testing sites are facilities where vertical transportation machinery is tested, usually through repeated trials in long elevator shafts. These sites normally require long vertical passages, and are typically placed in towers or underground shafts. They can be specially built facilities, or conversions of silos, observation towers, mines, or other structures.
The shaft accommodates trials of vertical transportation machinery. A passenger elevator carrying ordinary building traffic has a different purpose from a dedicated test installation.
A test shaft can extend above ground or below it. A converted silo or mine can provide the required passage without having been built originally as a testing facility.
