Austrian municipality key
The five-digit key identifying an Austrian municipality in the municipality register kept by Statistik Austria.
The Gemeindekennziffer is the key of the Gemeindeverzeichnis maintained by Statistik Austria, on the legal basis of the address register regulation. The register lists 2,092 municipalities.
Five digits in three parts: one for the Bundesland, two for the political district or a statutory city, and two for the municipality. Adnet is 50202, where 5 is Salzburg and 02 the district of Hallein. The first digit runs from 1 to 9, so the key never begins with a zero.
Vienna is a single municipality, 90001. The register carries a second column of district-level numbers for it, 90101 upward, which are a different thing and do not belong in this field.
Keys change when municipalities merge.
