general contractor

The company which hires and supervises all specialized subcontractors on a construction site.

A general contractor is a company responsible for hiring and usually overseeing all specialized subcontractors on a construction project. It is usually the primary construction company on a structure, and in many countries this role is the most common type of main contractor.

If a general contractor performs any type of contracting work (e.g. shell construction) by itself, then it can be connected with a structure in multiple roles.

The hiring responsibility distinguishes a general contractor from the broader main contractor, which is the leading construction firm. The general contractor can oversee specialist work and also execute particular construction work through its own operations.
