Finnish region code
The code identifying a Finnish region in the classification kept by Statistics Finland.
The regional division is decided by the Council of State; Statistics Finland publishes and versions the classification. There are 19 regions.
The classification code is two digits with the leading zero significant. Statistics Finland's own database prefixes it with MK, so the same region appears as 21 and as MK21 depending on the source; both refer to Aland.
The numbering is not continuous. Code 20, Ita-Uusimaa, was merged into 01 Uusimaa in 2011 and retired without being reused, and 03 is likewise absent. Aland sits at 21, out of sequence with the rest.
A new version of the classification is issued for each year, so a value is best read alongside the year it came from.
