quarry

An open mine used for the extraction of construction materials from the earth.

A quarry is an open-pit mine for the large-scale extraction of materials used in a bulk, raw state, especially for construction purposes. Quarried materials are usually some form of rock, either whole (as in blocks of stone) or particulate (sand, gravel, clay, etc.).

The deposit supplies material in bulk, either as large blocks or as particulate material. Sand and gravel extraction therefore differ in output from cutting building-stone blocks while sharing a raw-material extraction purpose.

A yard storing or selling material quarried elsewhere does not perform extraction. Later shaping or manufacture is also distinct from removing the natural material from its deposit.
