hemp loose fill

Loose hemp fibers packed into wall or roof cavities as thermal insulation, generally from low-psychoactivity plant varieties.

Hemp loose fill is a thermal insulation material made from loose fibers of cannabis plants (Cannabis sativa), which are packed into cavities in walls and roofs. It is generally made from varieties of the plant which are extremely low in psychoactive chemicals, compared to the varieties of cannabis used as a drug. It is an environmentally sustainable material, but may require the addition of fire retardants and insect repellents.

The insulating fibers come from hemp varieties generally low in psychoactive compounds. The definition concerns a building material, not consumption of the plant.

The fibers are installed loose in the cavity. Additives can provide fire or pest resistance without turning the material into a rigid insulation panel.
