quadrangle

A quadrangle is a grassy plaza positioned at a central or significant point within the overall plan of a campus or a city. It may contain trees, flowers, fountains, etc., but generally lacks recreational facilities, and is not considered a park.

The open space has a deliberate position within the surrounding plan. Trees, flowers, or fountains can accompany its predominantly grassy plaza form.

A park is a landscaped area for recreation and relaxation. The quadrangle instead has the central plaza role and general absence of recreational facilities described above.
