A cooking school is a place dedicated to classes in gastronomic and culinary skills. Both professional cooking academies and more casual self-improvement centers are included in this usage.

Professional preparation and personal skill development are both included. The students need not be training for restaurant employment.

The dedicated activity is teaching cooking. A restaurant or commercial kitchen does not become a cooking school solely because food is prepared there.
