A concrete-in-steel composite structure is a mixed material framework with hollow steel beams filled with poured concrete. Very often this is accompanied by a core or shear wall built exclusively of reinforced concrete, so it may share properties of a tandem frame.
This type of frame is usually used for extremely large buildings, including a few supertall buildings in Asia.
The concrete occupies the interior of the steel member. Steel-in-concrete composite has the reverse arrangement, with concrete surrounding the steel member.
