VAT identification number

An identifier for a business, individual, or other entity registered for Value Added Tax.

A VAT identification number is a unique number or string of characters used to identify a business, individual, or other entity responsible for collecting or paying Value Added Tax.

In the European Union, VAT numbers generally begin with a country prefix followed by characters in a national format. A business with VAT registrations in several member states can hold a separate number for each registration.

A VAT identification number has a different administrative purpose from the national tax number, even where the two share digits. Germany issues the VAT number as an independent number in addition to the tax number.

Registration requirements depend on the country and the activities involved. Turnover thresholds and voluntary registration can be relevant, but they are not the only grounds for registration. An entity without a registration obligation may operate without a VAT identification number.
