Nut cultivation is the controlled growth of edible seed-kernels, of which the seeds are generally medium to large, high in oil, and encased in a shell. These include tree nuts as well as plants with culinary similarity such as peanuts.

The category follows the edible kernel and its culinary use. Peanuts are expressly included even though they are botanically legumes rather than tree nuts.

The seeds are generally oily and enclosed in shells, but the definition does not require cultivation on trees. A plant's growing form alone does not determine whether its crop belongs here.
