NUTS code

The code identifying a region in Eurostat's Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics, the European Union's hierarchy of statistical regions.

NUTS is the hierarchy of statistical regions that Eurostat maintains for the European Union, adopted in 2003. A code opens with the two-letter country code and adds one character per level: ITC11 is Italy, then North-West Italy, then Piedmont, then the Metropolitan City of Turin.

The levels are cut by population, not by administration. NUTS 1 aims at 3 to 7 million people, NUTS 2 at 800,000 to 3 million and NUTS 3 at 150,000 to 800,000, with exceptions for islands and remote areas.

A NUTS region therefore need not match any unit a country actually governs. Where a national register code exists, it names the place more directly.
