microwave-relay phone transmission

A site relaying telephone signals by microwave along fixed paths, using line of sight or scattered signals.

Pictured: BT Tower

Microwave relay transmitters send signals to each other along fixed pathways through the air, and must either use a line-of-sight pathway between themselves or be able to send and receive scattered signals.

The relay follows an established path through the air between transmitting and receiving sites. It is distinct from a connection carried entirely by telephone wires or fiber-optic cables.

Direct line of sight is one allowed arrangement. Reception of scattered signals is also expressly included, so the category does not require every pair of transmitters to have a direct visible path.
